I can relate. I am eight years older than you, but boy does our body change with a bit of weight and bit of neglect. FYI, it gets even worse after you hit the magic 40! I have noticed the same things as you, what worked in the past is really different a few years later. It has taken me 3 months to lose 15 lbs. and I have 15 more to go. Along with them are these "fat patches" that are in my belly, inner thigh, top of my butt and of course, the dreaded bat wings. I never had these before and am unsure how to combat them. Well, I will keep exercising away and watching my diet. I wish you good luck! Stick with it. It works but it just takes longer! I also would like to look like your avatar. What great motivation!
