I can't believe that I actually seem to be reasonably successful (so far). I'm finding it easier to watch my portion size rather than constantly seeking new recipes my husband will eat

Way to go! Portion sizes are a big part of it. Or making small exchanges, like cooking spray for butter... etc. Thats the biggest first step... if I'd had to change everything "today", I woulda quit.
