The Power of 9 - Easy ways to boost longevity
In 2000 a team of scientists began studying cultures where people live longest. The residents of these "Blue Zones" don't diet or belong to health clubs, but they do share common healthy behaviors. We call the the Power 9:
1. KEEP MOVING - Find ways to move naturally, such as walking, gardening, using fewer labor saving devices. 2. FIND PURPOSE - And pursue it with passion. 3. SLOW DOWN - Work less, rest, take vacations. 4. STOP EATING - ... when you're 80 percent full. 5. DINE ON PLANTS - Eat more veggies, and less meat and processed foods. 6. DRINK RED WINE - Do it consistently but in moderation. 7. JOIN A GROUP - Create a healthy social network. 8. FEED YOUR SOUL - Engage in spiritual activities. 9. LOVE YOUR TRIBE - Make family a high priority.
I found this in all places, an AARP publication. As I read through them I realized that many of them are things that I have unknowingly tried to incorporate into my life in the past few years. I can't do number 6 because red wine triggers migraines for me. The rest really struck a chord with me. I found number 7 here. Fatsecret has become a social network for me ... and a healthy one at that!! Of course I have a face-to-face social network too ... but FS has given me that which I did not have, people who truly understand another side of me that some of my dearest friends and loved ones just don't because they haven't struggled with the same issues with food and body image that we have. Anyway ... I wanted to share it today. I cut out the article and put it up on my fridge to remind me daily. LOL!!! I regularly visit the fridge!!
Weekends are too short. I have so much to do. I need to get some organizing done to get ready to file taxes. I haven't even touched the house this weekend other than to do laundry and ironing. I probably won't do any housework this weekend. Oh well, the kitchen is relatively clean as is the bathroom. Why stress about a few wood chips on the carpet and dust on the furniture?
Weight was steady today from yesterday. I did take time to move my body and did both my Pilates and some time on the elliptical. Bob wanted to have a good friend of ours over to dinner tonight but I am totally unprepared. Next weekend I think. I'd like to spruce up the house a tad at least and have an actual meal planned to cook. He only had one day off this week, today, and I think he needs his rest anyway. I do need to call Bruce though ... and see if he's free next Saturday or Sunday for dinner!!
So January 10th has arrived ... ten days into a "new" year ... eight days from my one year anniversary here!! I'll continue to work on seeing myself as I really am and learning how to be content. Not stagnant, not meaning I'll never lose more weight, just more at peace with the process since it is a process that will continue for the rest of my life. I don't want to feel bad anymore about my body or enjoying what I decide to eat. That should keep me busy for another couple of decades!! LOL!!
I hope you've all had a restful, enjoyable, and perhaps downright fun time this weekend!!! Oh yeah, the Power 9 reminded me of several of you as I read through them. I dedicate #1 to Amyrk with her closing of joyful movement on each of her journal entries. #5 goes to veggiesyuk with her ongoing pursuit of incorporating more vegetables into her daily diet. #6 reminded me of beets_yum ... I picture her enjoying her glass of red wine!! #7 of course goes out to all of you fellow travellers here!! #3 actually reminded me of me as Bob and I work hard to make sure we take time off and PLAY as much as we can. #4 reminded me of so many of you who are trying to stop your membership in the clean-plate club. #'s 2, 8, and 9 remind me of just about everyone here ... as you each pursue so many things with purpose and passion, so many of your personal spiritual pursuits shine through in your journal entries, and family is clearly a high priority for I think EVERYONE I interact with.
