I am an experienced marathoner. In the last 2 years, I've completed 8. In the last 10 years I've done 35. I'm not dumb. I'm not lazy. I'm no couch potato. But I have certainly missed a lot of opportunities to finish my marathons faster and easier, set a better example for my kids, reduce the weight-related expenses that my dear husband has had to deal with, stop taking blood pressure medicine -- I could go on and on.

According to those generic height/weight charts, I'm nearly a hundred pounds overweight. Of course, I don't need a chart to tell me that. It's illustrated all too frequently by the clothes I'm struggling to get into, the way bystanders rush to offer to pick up anything I've dropped, the time others are forced to wait while I awkwardly climb into and out of a car, the amusement park rides I skip because I fear I'll exceed the weight requirement, or the way I hesitate when I need to pass someone in a hallway or squeeze behind their chair in a conference room.

I'm reminded, strangely, of the line from a Harry Potter movie about "living a half-life." By choosing to eat as my cravings and emotion have led me, I've missed an entirely different life. But there's no point in looking back and whining. I need to look at what changing my life today will mean for my future.

Being a more attractive wife, a faster marathoner, a better example for my kids, a healthier person whose self-esteem will not be tied only to her current weight. Losing weight will not solve all my problems, but successfully tackling such a huge, lifelong issue may give me the confidence I need to face other problems more successfully.

Conquuering my weight initially will involve these tasks: finding the fun in it (like being able to use the calorie counter from my phone, graphing my diet and exercise progress, etc), building the belief that I can do it (self-efficacy), and valuing progress over perfection.

It's time to start from where I am. Moving on.
