3.4 miles walked today; doggies along for 1.2 miles. Very warm!!! Mid-80's when we went out and already 91 when I got back!
Yesterday, DH and I got involved in a dryer project that was a prime example of "mission creep." What should have been a quick and easy replacement of the cover on the outdoor vent turned into a project that went a couple of hours.
We ended up cleaning out the entire length of the dryer vent piping that runs underneath the floor from the dryer to the outside. This is a project that we've never done before. Of course, we've heard and read that it should be done periodically to prevent build-up and potential fires, but we've both poo-poo'ed that idea, feeling that as long as we clean the dryer's filter, and that the overall vent looks clear when you move a dryer into place, we're fine.
We didn't start out with the idea of cleaning it. I began to clean out the small amount of lint that was near the outdoor cap. Of course, it looked like there was more, further in, so we had to try to make some sort of tool to get us back in there. Then, DH felt that we should be sure we could still "feel" the air coming through, so we turned the dryer on and he felt there should be MORE air coming through. So, that led us to trying to make another tool to get through more of the pipe to be sure we didn't have an obstruction...and, you can see, things began to take on a life of their own.
Let me tell you folks....I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!! I will NEVER move into another house and assume the venting is fine, as long as there's not a big clog where you hook up the dryer. We got a MAJOR amount of lint build-up out of that length of piping! There was a fairly substantial near-clog in the mid-pipe.....our guesstimate is that it was nearly a foot thick, although we may have inadvertently compacted it when we initially had a cleanout brush in there....it may have pulled out some of the lint but may have pushed some of it back into this near-clogged area. It took a whole lot of brute force (DH, not me) and maneuvering to break through that one and clear it from the entire circumference of the pipe.
Luckily, DH is VERY handy and has a good selection of tools and odd/leftover things, so he could fashion various "tools" to help us get through the blockages and clean out the entire length. We should have made a video for YouTube.....it would have been a comedy hit!
Anyhoo...the amount of lint coming out in big bunches amazed the both of us. The house is over 10 years old and our guess is that this may have been the first time that pipe had been cleaned out. And....no, I hadn't noticed a big problem with the dryer needing more time to dry clothes. You could still feel air coming through the pipe outside when we started, but man, was there a difference once we managed to get the pipe cleared!
The REALLY good news is that NO dead animals came out of the pipe. Even better news is that there were no live ones, either! LOL!!!
So, everyone.....get those dryer pipes cleaned out!
