I'm having a much better week than I have had recently and feeling so much better for it. I feel I'm really back in the groove, with daily weigh-ins at the forefront of my new weight loss tool box! I've stayed within RDI every day, walked more frequently and recorded steady losses all week, heading for a blue bar by Saturday I hope.

I've kind of given up going to the gym since my holiday in England, for a whole load of reasons. Firstly I was really unwell for a couple of weeks when we first came back, then I had a week of evening meetings at work. The weather is continuing very cold (an unusually long, harsh winter here) and all of those things make it hard to go. On top of that, the facilities available in the UK just served to remind me that what passes for a class here is not up to standard; any fun I have is due to my own input rather than the efforts of the teacher. Finally, on last year's experience, membership surges at this time of year so that it's hard to get a space in the gym and you have to wait for equipment.

Instead I've decided to walk more frequently and further, and that's going well. It has the advantages that it costs nothing, I can easily vary the route and the intensity, and I get some contemplation time thrown in! In the next few weeks we should have lighter evenings and milder weather, which will add to the enjoyment.

Also I joined the beginner's yoga challenge on FS last week and that's going OK. Yoga is something I've often thought about since my early twenties and never done because I've always done more aerobic type of exercise, but now I have herniated disks in my neck and painful shoulders I think the move into a more gentle way of exercising will be good. I'm hoping I can develop this and use it as a regular way to stay toned and supple into old age. I came across a quote some time ago that basically said we shouldn't be exercising just to get or stay slim, but so that we are flexible and agile enough to be able to get up from a chair without difficulty or walk to the shops when we're in our seventies and eighties. That's a thought that seems worth holding on to.

I really wish there was a public pool here as I love swimming, but that's a pleasure reserved for the summer. I'm in the sea or in the pool more than once a day over the summer months and I love it. I usually wake up really early, take a long walk along the beach and have a dip in the sea before work, and the sea is the first place I go when I get home from work, too. Just thinking about it now is relaxing! Not long until it gets warmer, I hope.
