I'm trying to shake up my diet a little, and still settle at a calorie count that takes off the weight. I am supposed to be eating somewhat less protein and somewhat more carbs, and yet, still lose weight. This is because high protein diets are not good for kidney stones...well they're very good for FORMING kidney stones but not so good for preventing them. So the doctor would really like me to eat less protein. It's so darn complicated, because I know that I can't lose weight if I don't keep my carb count manageable, but I don't want kidney stones either. It's all very annoying. So tonight for dinner I had Whole Foods version of Cheerios with yogurt and berries. Strange, I know -- but I wasn't in the mood for anything really, but I was hungry. And I knew I shouldn't thaw out a burger or steak because, well, I'm trying to lower my protein. Grr....

Hey Hermoines Mom. I know you want to follow your doctor's orders. Those kidney stones are painful! Instead of increasing your carbs, why not eat moderate protein and higher fat? Like the LCHF diet?

Mom2B -- unfortunately, when you limit animal protein, you sort of automatically limit fat, unless you're planning to drink olive oil or coconut oil (which I can't actually digest). It's a conundrum.

stones have haunted me all my life new doctor has me drinking at least 90 oz of water every day, all the diets I have been on have not worked but I wish you the best of luck

RJS1948 -- well that's not encouraging! Actually, my doctor says that when you develop them later in life as I have, it's generally very nutrition-related. I didn't get stones until I had to go on the low-FODMAP IBS diet about 2 years ago, and they forgot to tell me that IBS people are very susceptible to stones because of a) dehydration from IBS and b) the low-FODMAP diet is high oxalate, so it forms stones. I am drinking as much as I possibly can: water with lemon, non-fat milk (especially when I am eating a high oxalate food), grapefruit juice mixed with selzer, mint tea with lime, ginger-lemon tea. I am always drinking something. I never get into the car without a 1/2 liter bottler of water that I try to finish in whatever time it takes me to drive where I'm going. Wow.

Keep up with the water they had me on every diet you could think of and nothing worked until one doctor told me to drink as much water as possible and then drink a little more, good luck
