I am really upset right now. just had a talk with my mother, and she told me that she is very sad because I am skipping meals. And she said I could get an eating disorder? I am not sure whether to talk to a professional somehow or something but I am not sure. But the last thing I want is to become severely underweight. But eating more than 800 calories makes me feel like I will gain weight. Is this something wrong with me mentally? I know it won't make me gain weight but something is telling me that it will. The beauty standards these days are so toxic it is making me feel horrible, I know they are unrealistic. So I am not sure what is making me think this way. I will update you tomorrow with how much I weigh, it is always good to lose a bit but if it is a lot should I be concerned? I weighed myself just now at 7:21 pm after eating and wearing heavy clothes without going to the toilet and I only weigh 57.7 kg. In the mornings I weigh 57.3, Usually, I would be weighing at least 59kg at this time. Just to clarify I am not self-diagnosing myself with an eating disorder.

While I can only comment from my experience, I found my emotions held my weight, even while only eating 800 calories. Emotions/stress are strong components in not only mental health, but all over health. If you are skipping meals, not able to mentally get past eating only 800 calories, then yes, it's time to seek professional help. Talking to someone, even if it's not mental health professional, can make a difference. If you have a family doctor, they can refer you to a dietician or mental health professional, if they feel you need it. Reaching out is hard to do, but I think at this point, it is necessary, if only to help you figure out what's going on.

Hi 800 calories is not enough and can have the opposite effect. Base your calorie intake on your basal metabolic rate. You could probably see a nutritionist and speak with them. It sounds like your thought processes may already be becoming disordered. I would also reach out to your primary doctor to see if referrals are appropriate

Also there’s no need to weigh yourself everyday. Everyone’s body fluctuates with hormones and water.

It really is calories in vs. calories expended. Yes, it’s better to have those calories come in regularly to maintain but unless they are simple sugars/starches, your body can generally maintain the expenditure rate. Then again, a “meal” can be something as simple as a banana or an apple with some peanut butter….. doesn’t have to be a protein and two veggies. One component of this tool is the nutritional tracking. Show her that you’re eating “what your body needs”.

If you go too low with your calories your body will go into shutdown and 'starvation' mode and you may see no weight loss at all. Regardless of diet you must fill your tank with fuel for living. 800 is a low number you should add at least 400 to that number. I agree with the other commenters and seek some nutrition advice. Do some research on your own as well. Try and not get into a 'zone' of 'I must and I must not' Diets are fluid in the aspect that they much change as your body changes, there is no solution that fits every individual. Take care of yourself first, no guilt only happy, SAFE, progress. Best of Luck!

if you have an opportunity to talk to a professional, then give it a try and see how it makes you feel. its just talking 🙂.

A couple years ago I was losing weight and lost 40 pounds, and was doing good… But my diet was truly low carb, low, fat, low calorie, low everything. I plateaued so hard, even though I was working out 5 to 6 days a week, walking, in addition to that, and skipping a few meals. My body went into starvation mode, and I couldn’t lose a single ounce. Your body needs nutrition and calories to sustain it or it will do this. Talk to a professional or even maybe a nutritionist to get you on the right track… You can do it!

Hi, Christina, When I was a teen I ate randomly, sometimes just french fries for lunch, hot dogs, tomatoes, whatever. In college I couldn't afford food and would eat peanut M&Ms for lunch. None of this damaged my health, I did lose weight when I was in college due to not having any $ and smoking. You don't sound terribly overweight but if you want to lose it is better to be very active and burn it off. Good luck.

Hello, I saw a few of your recent posts but I haven’t commented yet. But I’d like to share something. When I was a teenager I did not eat much either. I was given lunch money each day and I would just save it. And every morning I would skip breakfast. So the only meal I ate was whatever my family had for dinner, which was often not much because my parents were very busy. I spent a lot of time in my teen years feeling very depressed and bad about myself. In retrospect, I think I could have been a happier person had I given my body the nutrition it needed - my brain would have been functioning better and I would have felt less irritable. I think I would have done better in school sports too. The other girls had so much more energy and power than I did. At the time I never connected that with my lack of nutrition. If your mother is expressing concern, I’m very happy for you because it means you have an adult in your life who notices you and cares about you. Maybe you could talk to her about getting some guidance from a professional before your feelings about food start to hold you back in life and harm your health. I hope you continue to look at your relationship with food and try to find a healthy approach that makes you feel good. It’s only by examining our lives that we can be honest and make real improvements :)

If talking to someone would give you peace of mind then please do. 800 calories is very low. You burn calories just living each day even if you aren’t working out and your body needs to be able to sustain that. If you look online for a macro calculator you can put your age, height, weight, activity level, and whether or not you want to lose fat, build muscle, or maintain. Chose to maintain the weight you are at and see how many calories you need. Don’t be alarmed at the number and don’t stress about weighing yourself so often. Consider more how you feel - do you have energy, are you sleeping well, etc. Try to choose calories from foods that give you nutrients. Hope that helps.

My daughter is currently in recovery from an eating disorder for eating too little (restriction). I think going to see a nutritionist is very important. They can educate you on what your body needs and how to maintain a healthy weight. We have learned so much. It's best to go before it turns into an eating disorder and then it won't be a choice you can easily make, at that point your body takes over and every meal can be a battle to recover. Best of luck!

skipping meals is never a good idea. you need fuel to function. Also if you don't eat often your metabolism slows down thinking your body is in starvation mode and will work to hold on to what ever you eat to survive and you'll end up gaining not losing weight. You are best grazing quality food all day of have 5 or 6 small meals a day including good protein and healthy fats in nuts or avocado. That will keep you energized throughout the day and keep your metabolism humming all the time to use those calories. also anything below 1000 calories is considered malnourished.

hi i am also a teen on here and so some of the things that i feel like i should say because it depends on the situation you are in etc, are you skipping meals even when youre hungry even if there is food on the table or just when you aren't (are you purposely eating less to lose weight) also 800 calories from what i've heard is low and i think the average is around 1000 to 1200 so does 800 calories leave you hungry at the end of the day or is it enough? i also struggle with beauty standards as an overweight teen but if you do have someone to talk about this too aka a professional such as a therapist i would advise you to if you don't feel comfortable talking to your mom about something like this :)

you should research the concept of BMR. most likely yours is higher than 800, most likely higher than 1200. so what you should do is focus on fitness activities and keeping your calories above BMR. Very low calorie diets will just make you skinny fat.
