I have a problem and would like some advice. Every Sunday I visit my family (parents, brother, and sister-in-law) for dinner. It is a tradition with our family. However many of the dinners that are fixed by my brother or my folks and not something I can look up and get a serving size or nutritional facts. I am on a low carb diet (my own - not Atkins, etc). I do not want to always bring my own meal with me, because I don't want to offend anyone. And lets face it most of the food is really yummy and stuff I grew up eatting. A lot of the time I don't record it on my food diary because I don't know how to enter it. an someone give me idea's how to record it? I have been trying to figure it out for a long time now.

I don't know if you will find this helpful and it can be a little time consuming but when I run up against something like this I just enter the ingredients separately with an estimate as to how much of them I ate. I know it may not always be the most accurate way to do it but it is better than nothing and will still get you an idea of your carbs and cals.

ditto to Bluerose. Each item individually. Then you'll get a total of carbs, protein, fiber, fat.

It will be time consuming... but this is how I found this web cite. I googled the question... " How many calories are in a bowl of chick fil a chicken noodel soup?" This web cite came up.. I typed in other calories counts.. and this web cite kept coming up.. so I went to it.. .and Liked it! I joined yesterday! So.. my suggestion is to do like bluerose411. Ask what is in it.. and look it up.. which is just a type it in the forum.. and the calorie count comes up. I am keeping a journal writting down like you.. what I eat.. so I hope this dicipline works! Also...if I really wanted to try something that I think is high calorie.. I think maybe a tablespoon to taste. Good luck...I think since you are thinking about it ...you are on the right track.

If these are dishes that you eat regularly, have your family give you the recipe and enter it into your cookbook. That way, you get good nutritional information for the meal you are eating and it is simple to add to your daily log when you have. It does take some time to collect all the recipes in your cookbook, but in the long run, it makes things much easier.

*blushes* I had honestly never thought of entering them into the cookbook. Most of the meals I know what is in it but not always the amounts my family has used. Like tonights dinner, they are making hamburger stew. Normally it is made with hamburger, potatoes, green pepper, tomato juice, onion, and spices. Made is a slowcooker all day. I have asked them before to right down the amounts of the ingredients they used, but I can promise you they have not done it. they won't remember if they used a 80:20 hamburger or not. It is very fustrating.

Yes, I agree about using recipe cookbook. You can add all the ingredients and then just add a serving size to your food diary. Or, you will learn to estimate what you have eaten. Low carb means you may want to avoid the potatoes in the stew. The easiest thing is to eat smaller portions - and enjoy the company of your family!

Ditto on the breakdown and then adding to your FS recipes. Also, if you think the ingredients might much up with a manufacturer's food, you can sub until you do a breakdown. Example: Marie Callender's lasagna or Dinty Moore's beef stew. Have fun and enjoy your family!!
