Progress!

Starting as I mean to go on, I decided to attack my goals (see previous journal entry) head on yesterday and chose to tackle the biggest one first –

1. One day a week, eat no cheese whatsoever

It may not sound like much, but I would consider my love for cheese a borderline addiction and have eaten it every single day for years. When I snack, I don’t reach for the junk food, the surgary treats or greasy burgers and kebabs. Oh no…I reach for the cheese. One day a week is 52 days a year without any cheese. That’s a lot!

Eating good vegetarian food without relying on cheese is going to be a bit of a learning curve for me, having never really learned to cook properly and never learning what I should be eating. It will require branching out and trying new things, so that’s exactly what I did.

Cue the aloo gobi saag, bombay potatoes, pilau rice and mini naan breads.

<a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/Sheona/Food%20and%20FS/2011-04-04192149.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/Sheona/Food%20and%20FS/2011-04-04192149.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket" width=500></a>

Having never really eaten Indian food before (because I’m a wuss when it comes to anything even mildly spicy), this was a huge adventure for me! Armed with my giant glass of water to gulp in between tingly-firey-spicy mouthfuls, I thoroughly enjoyed my non-cheesy 625 calorie meal and would happily eat that again! There was so much wonderful flavour that I didn’t even feel like I missed the cheese. The SO seemed pretty happy with it too. Combined with my morning porridge and homemade soup for lunch I would say that was a total success. Win!

While I was on a roll, I also decided to make some progress on number 4 on my list of goals for the month –

4. Join a gym and acquire the necessary clothing to actually go - no excuses!

Admittedly, I was little nervous about this one because I’ve never actually gone to a gym before. In the past I’ve just gone swimming or done sports like badminton or trampolining (obviously much fitter and slimmer back then!). So, feeling like I needed a little emotional support, I convinced the SO to walk down to the gym with me to help sign me up.

They were actually really lovely which made me feel much better, despite clearly being the largest person in the building. After a quick tour, they explained my unlimited access corporate discount membership – Win! – and booked me in for my gym induction for a week on Sunday. Even better was finding out that the trainer will sit down with me and draw up a training plan to help me achieve my weightloss & fitness goals. I also plan to get back in that swimming pool and even give zumba a try.

I felt like I wanted to start then and there. Unfortunately, I have no suitable workout clothes and I don’t think jeans or suit trousers would do. Also, my swimming costume will no doubt be too small at this stage. So…I have acted on the second part of this goal and ordered a pair of sweatpants and 2 tops from a catalogue which should hopefully arrive by this weekend? My mum has also offered to loan me her swimming costume (assuming she can find it) until I slim down into my old one as she and I are currently the same size and it seems crazy to spend £40+ on something I hope won’t fit me soon!

Overall, I’m feeling very positive and know that the key to this is in taking everything a step at a time. It is possible. I can do it. I am doing it. As per goal number five -

5. Believing that I can succeed

I CAN SUCCEED.

Amazing job! :] All of those things are very very positive steps in the right direction! Looking forward to watching you go threw the changes and get into going to the gym! :] I have never had Indian food either, I love spicy food I am just a giant wimp. Maybe I should check it out next week after pay day. And I hear you about the cheese addition... I am in the exact same boat. I too never learned how to properly eat as a vegetarian. I do plan on cutting back on it so its a more balanced part of my life, and this sounds like a great way to start! Glad to hear everything is going great! :]
