Back on the walking road again this AM with a 3.3 mile trek, both doggies along for 2.6 of it. It's much cooler today, but I still wore shorts cuz I didn't feel like changing.

Today, I want to journal about choices. I believe every food we eat is a result of a choice. I wrote a "tip" this AM about how we may not like the alternatives, but there are always choices. Events and other people do not CAUSE us to go off plan, our choices do.

I want to journal my choices for foods on a trip to Atlanta because some people have asked me to and because I feel there are some on this site who haven't seen that it's possible to be on plan while traveling and how to do it.

Let me also say that it's a CHOICE to stay on plan, go off plan, or do something in the middle, when traveling. None of those decisions are wrong, it just depends on where you are in your journey and how you can handle the aftermath. The important thing is that it should be a conscious decision, not something that "happens" to you.

Yes, DH and I packed up a lot of our own food and had several coolers along on our trip, due to the fact that we drove. We talked about how it would be different if we had to fly. We would just have to go with more restaurant/hotel food and make sure we made the best choices possible - OR - make a grocery trip once we arrived at our destination.

DH said he felt like we were the Beverly Hillbillies when we checked in because of the coolers! But I made sure to tell him every time I saw anyone else checking in/out of a hotel there with coolers just like ours. As I prepared for Atlanta, DH and I had a discussion about whether or not to even try to stay on Atkins (choices!). I said that I was not at or near my goal and couldn't afford to go off plan for several days (my choice here). So, he opted to go along with that choice as well (his choice).

We knew the hotel had refrigerators in every room, but no microwave. We were in a downtown location so there would be some meal options out in the world. The hotel also offered a small made-to-order breakfast menu, sandwiches and salads ready to go for lunch and a handful of dinner items as well (all choices).

I decided (a choice) to not rely on anyone else but me for breakfast and lunch and then just go with the best restaurant choices for dinner. I would need something for breakfast that I could eat cold and items that would travel well for lunch, due to me being out at shopping areas, some of which would have food courts but some not.

Before we left, I made a crustless spinach pie with ground turkey sausage and packaged up 2 slices of it for breakfast each day. DH put together 3 hard-boiled eggs and boneless meats for his own breakfasts.
For lunch he made up Caesar salads with additional meat. For my lunches out in the shopping world, I packed a cheese stick, a small rectangular piece of colby-jack cheese, a small container of 1/4 cup roasted sunflower kernels, and an Atkins bar. All those items fit into my purse and didn't need refrigeration after I packed them in the AM.

We also had snacks in the room...Nut-Rition Healthy Heart nut packs, Old Wisconsin beef sticks, a variety of Atkins bars, and extra cheese sticks and pieces. We also packed canned meats and green beans in case we just couldn't find appropriate food for a meal or two.

For dinner out in a restaurant, we went to a microbrew pub almost next door. It was very hard to find something there, but we had looked at the menu ahead of time and saw a great California Cobb salad (mixed greens, tomatoes, avocado, boiled egg, kalamata olives, and some type of dressing). Here, I made a CHOICE to not ask about the dressing and I made another CHOICE to not ask for it on the side. I was willing to live with those 2 choices.

At the brew pub, DH made a CHOICE to sample the microbrews.

Another day we went there, we both made the CHOICE to have the fish special, a pan sauteed Pompano fish with asparagus served on mashed potatoes. We made the CHOICE to ask for NO potatoes and were rewarded with the ability to add veggies, in this case I added broccoli.

DH again made the CHOICE to sample a microbrew.

On another day, we CHOSE to not go to a Southern-type restaurant because there was nothing Atkins-friendly about it. Everything was battered, deep fried and all the sides were sauces, gravies, etc.

We, instead, went to a steakhouse. We'd eaten here before and they always bring a loaf of great bread out to the table. I reminded DH about that and said we could always ask the waiter to not bring it at all (another choice). But, DH CHOSE to have it and CHOSE to eat it as well. I chose to not have any.

The steak I ordered was 10 oz, so I cut it in half right away, intending to take half back to the room. I ended up eating a bit of the "extra" because I was still hungry. Again, I CHOSE to ask for double veggies rather than potatoes.

Even on the drive home, we stopped at a KFC (a choice) for some chicken for lunch. We detoured most of the items on the buffet, but salad, green beans, and tender roast chicken (no breading) all worked.

On the way up to Atlanta, we stopped for lunch at Wendy's (a choice...we could have gone elsewhere or we could have packed our own lunches as we did for the upcoming days). I thought the salad I ordered had grilled chicken, but it turned out to have a lightly breaded piece of chicken. I had several choices here...I could have asked for/paid for a piece of grilled chicken and swapped it out, I could have not eaten the breaded chicken, etc. But I CHOSE to eat the chicken as it was and simply go about the rest of the day on plan.

If I had gone on the scale the next day and found I had gained some amount of weight, it's important for me to realize that it was the result of a conscious CHOICE I made and not shirk responsibility by saying, "Well, that's what was on it, so I ate it."

This trip was so important for me in that it really solidified the belief that the foods I eat are not controlled by others or other events. The foods I eat are completely under my control, in all settings, and under all circumstances. There are always choices....different foods, wait to eat until later, eat beforehand, bring my own food, go out and buy appropriate food, etc.

What a refreshing journal. Yes, we all have our own choices to make. Sometimes we make the ones that we can accept and there are other times in which we regret them from the get go. You are kicking major booty girl. Dont think I could have made such wonderful decisions. Kudos.

Thank you for that Sandy - I especially apprecaiate the specifics (purse snacks & cooler items). This spring/summer is filled with upcoming events. Nice to know that the outcome (to my health) will be whatever I chose to make it.

I agree that in traveling we have to change routine but it is possible and it just depends on our choices. I invested in a cooler that you can plug into the car outlet and it cools while you go, (Make sure to unplug it and plug into hotel room outlet or it drains the car battery. TG for battery boost. lol) I just went a week back and forth on the road for spring break from Ga to TX. I traveled with my daughter and packed several days of my NS meals after reading several FS blogs like yours that say you can do it traveling. I chose bars and NS meal items I knew I could eat easily with out any extra prep. I made bad choices a few times and ate out, but surprisingly my daughter liked severel of the NS meals as well. We even drank soup at hand and NS soups with out heating them. The same applied for several NS dinners I didn't have a way to nuke them so I put them on the sunny side of the car and let the sun nuke it for me. Luke warm spagetti is not recommended, but I didn't die, and actually spent less money on eating out. Great benefit. Thanks for the great journal. You gave me more ideas for the next great road trip in the summer.
