Discovered a new way tonight of working with my brain's appetite chemistry, which I've never heard of before.

While waiting for my potatoes to boil, I ate a delicious crunchy raw bell pepper that I'd already chopped up and a handful of mixed seeds. Once the rest of the food was ready, the “I’m getting full” signals (cholecystokinin/CCK, released by the intestines in response to food consumed during a meal) were already kicking in. By the time I actually ate I struggled to finish what I had.

I suppose it's the original thinking behind “appetizers” but I've never actually done it before. I wonder if other people do. Definitely going to try it with other meals from now on.

Yep.. just next time don't struggle to finish what you had; put it in the fridge for later :-) Sipping hot lemon water helps too. Anything so that by the time I start I'm not so ravenous I can actually pay attention to the food.

Thanks, Bella -- duly noted. Sometimes though, like tonight, I do have to make myself finish a meal. Otherwise, my daily intake can drop all too easily below 1200 cals a day. Not good, when you're as active as I am and, now that I think of it, probably quite odd that someone whose appetite sometimes vanishes so completely could ever have got so overweight :-) Thanks, too, for the tip about hot lemon water. For some weird reason, while I like lemon generally, I absolutely *hate* it in hot water -- unless there's lots of sugar/honey in there too. I've tried putting a slice of lemon in tea, too, but it still utterly grosses me out. Never mind, though, lots of healthy stuff about to use as appetizers.
