It is officially off! The pounds I "found" on vacation have been misplaced again plus a little bit! I am so excited about the way I handled things on vacation and how I am managing my new life! Last night was super busy and I didn't eat dinner until late. We ended up deciding on grabbing El Pollo Loco for dinner instead of me cooking at 9:30pm. I ordered the chicken breast meal with double garden salad (my favorite!), no tortillas and took the skin off (I don't always do this but thought I should save the calories this time). We also got a tortilla soup to share (no chips and cheese) as I LOVE soup and this one is a favoritie of mine and a real treat to get it because it is kind of pricey. Anyway, I took the first bite of the soup and it was GROSS!!! The chicken was mush and dry and the broth tasted burnt :( In my old life I would have eaten it anyway and just complained about how gross it was, this time, I just said...no thanks! If it doesn't taste good, there is no reason to eat it. One more success for me :)

So, yesterday I journaled about wanting to teach cooking classes with families and kids and I also want to learn more about food and nurtition and how our bodies work etc. I applied to the local community college yesterday and was accepted (lol... I already have a BA so I wasn't really expecting anything less but hey... it is always nice to get a letter saying you have been accepted to something!). There is an online class I am going to try to get into this semester. The semester starts on Saturday though and I am not sure I can get everything in order by then... If not, I will go in the Spring. I am excited about learning more, and taking the new knowledge with the old knowledge and my teaching experience and making a difference in kids' lives!

Thats great shannon you are doing awesome! And congrats on getting accepted to school and heading back to classes you must be so excited! I'm trying to get there too, but with things going on with mom its tough! But i am so so proud of you the way you tackled vacation, especially midnight truckstop snack runs hehe!

Thanks Les! Ya, the truckstops on the way too NY weren't so bad but at the end of the vacation I was exhausted, had eaten way too much over the 12 days, and was kind of emotionally drained knowing I won't see my family again for so long. Those truckstops called my name like crazy... I did OK.. but could have done better...lol Oh well... it's all done and gone now :) I want to be a teacher so bad but I am just not feeling the classroom drama and the double full-time hours for half time pay that teachers make. I don't want to miss out on time with my family ya know? But I want to help kids learn to feed themselves healthy so they don't have to grow up and be worrying about their weight and health like I have! And... truth be told... I LOVE going to school! I love learning, especially about things that have relevance in my life. I hope things get better for your mom and that you are able to get back to school too! What are you planning to go for? What do you do now?

I am actually on disability because of a neurological condition, pseudotumor cerebri. I write about it in my journal alot, it keeps me from being able to do the career I loved. But before I got sick I was a archivist/docent/preservationist at a historic church and burial ground here in Philadelphia. Actually it is one of the most historic churches in the nation, Christ Church. I went to school for art but want to go back and get my Masters in history to either teach or be a dedicated archivist. Right now i'm leaning towards teaching though. But I also love going to school, I often wish we could be professional students and academicians like they had and respected hundreds of years ago. Knowledge and a broad knowledge base used to be respected and admired both socially and financially, now not so much! And you sure can't make a living of it!

Oh yes, I do remember reading something in one of your past journals trying to figure out why you needed a spinal tap...ouch! How long have you been sick? Is there treatment that can help? There are so many historic places near you, you must be in Heaven! People who are passionate about what they love make great teachers! You are a fantastic writer and have so much humor and experience to offer, you would make a great teacher. Hopefully it all comes together and you can realize that dream! Losing all that weight sure will make attending classes easier LOL! (those desks are make for Barbie dolls) Ya, now we have computers to do all the thinking smart people used to have to do...lol.

Yay school is fun.. I am going to scope out the schools this fall.. and then sign up for classes in the winter or spring semester.. It will just depend on what is out there for me to take and jives with the kids school schedule first. I know I will probably be able to take on line classes for sure.. but I really prefer regular classes. But I think online will just work out with my schedule better. We will see.. who knows I may win the lottery! :P doubtful cause I dont play.. :)

You know, I was thinking this morning that I probably lost the "unemployment" weight (or most of it at least). The next 25 lbs is the desk job weight, lol. Good luck with classes! I personally really like school but I'm a giant nerd

Sorry took so long getting back to you actually had to run to the sox to get a blood patch to help with the pressure headaches from my last spinal tap. So I've been sick going on 4 years I think lol? They blend together after awhile of doing the same thing day after day! Yeah I was diagnosed in 2006 so yep. But I had symptoms before that. There are treatments both medical and surgical. I do mostly meds and the occasional lumbar puncture. The surgery right now is apparently a big risk. But yep I'm excited to get more weight lost and get well and get back out into the work force. If my illness goes into remission then I will look into teaching but I'm Leary about teaching with a seizure disorder. Stress sometimes ok alot of times is a trigger for me! So hopefully I lose weight and seizures go away!

It's all good Les, I can't expect you to just wait around to talk to me! LOL! Wow that must be such a challenge to live with an illness like that. I have so much respect for people with chronic illness and disorders who can just keep on chugging away... I don't know if I have that much strength inside me. My aunt has MS and it's tough! You never know what your body might do without all of the extra weight! Miracles can happen! You have already lost enough weight to equal a couple lil kids, that is incredible and I am sure you feel so much better already. Imagine the next 90 lbs! When I lost the first 100 pounds I remember just being in awe... that was more than my son weighed at the time and I couldn't lift him to save my life! I am down 150 lbs now and my health has never been better! I wish the best for you too! I think you will make a fantastic teacher! And probably a pretty good baseball coach too :)

Ya, Suechru... I am kinda nerdy too. My degree is in liberal studies and then I have most of my master's in Education. I so enjoyed all of the classes I took along the way...art, music, philosophy, phsy, and more. I always feel so smart when I can answer the questions on Jeopardy and Trivia Pursuit and everyone else is like WTH?? LOL

I double majored in philosophy for fun. I'm working on an MBA and haven't ruled out a more technical MS (in comp sci or a science) when I'm done with this one so I hear you. I really should try to get on a game show someday, I'd probably make a killing.

Oh I already plan on coaching! I coached baseball while I was in college for a summer and loved it and umped while in HS for fun at a local play ground and was JUST tonight thinking about umpiring school because of an ad I saw looking for part time umps for low level junior college ball. As for my health I am REALLY hoping my dome issue clears up when I get wee! But I will confess this.. I am a BIG BIG BIG nerd as well so you ladies are not the only ones! I read college text books for classes I don't even take just for fun!

Wow Suechru! You are WAAAAAAAY smarter than me :) Yes you should try out for Millionaire or Jeaopardy!

My 11 year old is really into baseball like I told you before. Although his skills are amazing and he loves the game, a coach has so much impact on a kid's confidence. He has been so down on himself to on top of the world just based on how he is coached. Great coaches are worth so much! With the baseball knowledge and passion you have and the life experiences, you would really do so much good for kids! Great umps are important too and that is one job you could not pay me enough to do no matter what! Especially at the Little League level... "those" parents (of course never me ;) are crazy! I love to learn and have a fantastic memory if I hear something but I really don't like to read that much. Once in a while I read a book that looks good, just read one on vacation actually. I like to hear things and experience things and learn that way. So you guys read all the books and tell me about them k? :)
19 Agu 10 oleh anggota: Shannon1743
Ok sounds good Shannon. I try to read like this, one book for fun and at the same time one book for my brain and now with my audio book going while I walk one book on audio. So I have three books burning at once lol! As for "those" parents yeah I hate "those" parents. Whats sad is that is really a newer happening. I think that just started to occur when I was a kid. Now it happens every single game. Its so sad. What position does your son play? Depending on the position a coach can kill or bolster a kids development. That's why you see some many ML players coming out of one school or one little league team. its not something in the water its the coaches.

He is pretty much at short and pitching now but has played 1st, 3rd, and catcher over the years. He really likes to catch but they usually find that they have to stick someone a little slower behind the plate and he is too "valuable" to let him catch even though he is awesome at it and that is the position I most like to watch him play :). Honestly though, he just likes to play and will play anywhere. We actually don't have to many bad parents at our Little League but the umps sure do have to deal with alot of little jabs..lol. My daughter has become a bookworm over the last two years. She didn't used to like to read much until she read the Twilight books. She read the whole series in about a month and then hasn't stopped reading. She has books lined up to read and that is what she spends most of her money on or she gets them from the library. I am so glad she enjoys reading! My 11 year old has a form of dyslexia and reading is so laborious for him :( I am hoping that some book will just inspire him to like reading and he will keep going. He is reading a required book before school starts and seems to really enjoy it. There are 2 or 3 more in the series so I am hoping this is it! :)

Yeah.. he is 11 so right now all the talented kids pitch. In a few years though if he still is showing skills and they are still progressing have him try out for catcher have him groom himself for catcher as much as possible. That is unless he is completely OVERWHELMING as a pitcher and I mean like SICKENING, and your husband being the fan he is will know what this looks like! Catchers starting in HS even just mediocre talents have a great chance at getting some type of scholarship because it is such a high skill position with very little talent flow. In little league not so much as you said put the slow kids there with the good arms lol. As for the reading its great that you have a bookworm in your daughter one series can open up the world of books to someone so yes your son will be fine! Have no fears!
20 Agu 10 oleh anggota: Kingcole35
He isn't OVERWHELMING as a pitcher..lol. He is decent but definately not the best. He gets better when he pitches alot but he has a hard time getting out of his head when something goes wrong. In every other position though, he is on it.. strange. I didn't know that about catchers though..hmmm... It would be nice to have some scholarships come our way. Our high school team here is decent I hear and he has a great arm and huge knowledge of the game. He is quick and keeps track of stuff and that makes him good at the plate. Not many coaches ever send their players to steal when he is catching :)I love watching him there in his catcher's gear and the huge smile he gets when he gets someone out! For the draft for little league last year he tried out to play in the upper division as a 10 year old (mostly 11-12 play this division) and he was ranked by the 5 coaches as the 2nd best player out of everyone who tried out... not too shabby huh? hehe (ok sorry proup Mommy got out for a minute! ) My kids each have thier own strengths... my daughter is brilliant but not the best athlete and my son is smart but the dyslexia causes some difficulties but he is an amazing athlete...then my little guy..well, he is both in one and a huge smart ass! lol
20 Agu 10 oleh anggota: Shannon1743
Well... then he sounds like the perfect catcher. Arm and knowledge of the game is HUGE. I caught forever till I realized I don't have a baseball players body lol. But yep! Catchers have better chances at advancing in upper leagues because of the talent curve and they are the highest position on the defensive spectrum. The most important thing with catching though and it will get him the furthest is his defense and ability to control a game. If he makes the switch to catcher or if he ever wants to learn how let me know I can recommend some websites and books. As an ex catcher I devoured info on catching and am a catching encyclopedia lol. But the thing you said that makes me think right now.. RIGHT THIS SECOND TELL HIM TO GET A CATCHERS MITT!!! LOL is this... "He is quick and keeps track of stuff and that makes him good at the plate." A great catcher needs to be a historian. They need to make a mental record of everything that happens on the field and how every hitter, base runner and pitcher reacts. Have you ever thought of this Shannon.. The Catcher is the ONLY defensive player facing outwards towards the field of play. He is an observer he is the man who is the pacesetter. Ok sorry tangent and again my passion for the game got a hold of me lol.
20 Agu 10 oleh anggota: Kingcole35
No I hear ya! Yes, the catcher is basically in control of the game. He has an incredible memory and is so quick to think. He has been listening to Dodger (keep your snickers to a minimum..lol) games on the radio since he was about 5 and he could follow the whole game, what was happening, who did what etc. That is incredible for a kindergartener! Yes, please recommend some stuff sites he can look at and even books...hey maybe that is the key to getting him to read!!! :)His problem has always been that he is young for his ability and he usually is playing with kids who can't keep up..lol. On All Stars he is much more evenly matched and he loves it. He had a full set of catcher's gear but it got stolen after one of his games :(. I got a call last night that another travel team wants to see him so he is going to go practice with them on Tuesday. What I really love though is how he has developed since he was a little guy and learned so much about technique and skill and how much effort he puts into getting better. That will take him so far in his life...just to have a drive to be good and work hard. I wish he loved school that much but he does ok and he knows he can't play baseball unless his grades are good so it all works out.

No snickers here... ok well maybe a few but they are just a few because I love old school announcers like Vin Scully! As for books, My first recommendation would be The art of catching by brent mayne, as for websites.. checkout baseball-catcher.com it is an amazing resource! This will get him thinking like a catcher but here is the biggest thing a catcher needs physically that ever instructor I ever went to or listened to told me... footwork. A great drill for this, and it drove my mom nuts was the summer I squat walked for two months lol. Basically walking in the squatting position lol. I took it to the extreme but doing it for like 15 minutes a day will have him squatting and developing his footwork like a champ! As for traveling teams that is AWESOME! That means he does have ALOT of talent so yeah I would maybe have him evaluated at a baseball academy for a day and see where his skills lie if they are catcher awesome develop the crap out of them! If not then focus on what they scout him as and watch him blossom! Ok see... yeah I want to coach lol.
