I just came to the realization that I was a SERIOUS carb hound (and calorie hound) before I started this journey to better health. I was sitting here at my desk, wishing I had a York Peppermint Patty...

Back in the day, I used to eat 8-10 of those little fun-size ones per day at work. This started me to thinking about what else I ate on a regular basis each day. Then I started adding it up. Then I was appalled.

A typical day for me went like this:

Breakfast (usually McDonalds) - 880 kcals; 80 carbs
Lunch (usually Burger King) - 1030 kcals; 95 carbs
Snacks (York Pep Patties) - 450 kcals; 100 carbs
Dinner (something w/pasta) - 800 kcals; 75 carbs
Ice Cream (nice big bowl) - 375 kcals; 50 carbs

TOTAL: (WAYYY TOO MUCH) - 3535 kcals; 400 carbs.

And I would have SWORN I really wasn't eating a lot, I couldn't imagine why I kept gaining weight. My A1C was on the steady rise and I was taking more and more medication. I was hungry all the time and told myself that I denied myself all kinds of goodies... Must be something wrong with me, or a medication causing it, or maybe I'm just "big boned". Yeah...

Today, I am happy and comfortable with around 25 net carbs for the day, nestled into around 1200-1400 calories. I am rarely hungry, have loads of energy, and the weight is just falling off. I've lost a little over 30lbs since March 5, 2018.

My take-away from this is:

If you don't know why you weigh what you do, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING YOU EAT for a week and then take an honest, hard look at your intake to see where extra weight may be coming from. This is particularly true if you try to just cut back, or assume that you are doing okay.

Honestly, until I sat down to give it real consideration, I never really thought about the impact of a daily drawer full of peppermint patties. It's funny the lies we can tell ourselves.

Glad it all came together for you. I also thrived on York Peppermint Patties after I quit smoking.

Yep, so true! I had no idea that I was going over my RDI on sugars every day before 10:00 am before I started logging food. It wasn't until I cut out all refined sugars that I started to shed the weight successfully. My husband was complaining about not losing any weight and I told him: "You need to start logging, to shed the weight." He started logging and started dropping...

I was also on a first name basis with Little Debbie. 2-3 pack/daily. Wicked little thing she was.

this is so true for so many people. its amazing (and sickening) how fast the calories can add up.

Thanks for posting - this process of adding it all up was a real eye opener for me; and the start of a new WOE. A couple big glasses of juice every day because it was healthy...not so much.

This was my diet minus Burger King. In California we have Carl's Jr. Also, instead of York Pep Patty I had a bag, (or two) of Cheetos (330 calories / 40 carbs a bag). Now I can actually get through the day with zero carbs...

powerful post! I was the same way...just ate mindlessly and always rationalized what I was eating. I could eat a whole bag of chocolate chips in a couple of days...Id eat a small handful several times a day and told myself I deserved the treat. A coke with lunch was also something I told myself I deserved. I'm actually surprised I didn't weigh more than I did. Best of luck to you!

I learned years ago that writing down what I ate was necessary to hold myself accountable when I did weight watchers. Anytime I stop logging food, I eat too much. So, yeah, no matter what woe I choose, I have to log to lose.

Like so many others. I didn't realize how much I snacked on nuts or cheese until I started logging. Although they are LC, they add up to calories that were way over my budget. Logging.. and keep on logging really does make a difference. BUT, logging B4 you eat is the best way.

@Jazzy, absolutely. If you can log BEFORE it goes in your mouth, all the better. I've made up my mind before to eat something, and when I went to log it and saw what it did to my day, I changed my mind.
